A few excerpts from the - Environmental Risk Analysis Program - Cornell University - Center for the Environment - Latest News - as of February 20, 2003

According to the Environmental Risk Analysis Program - Cornell University - Center for the Environment - the range of WNV in North America: In 2002 WNV has been detected in 44 states (2,289 counties) across the US and 5 provinces in Canada.

Human cases in U.S. as of Dec 19, 2002 according to the Center for Disease Control, reports 3,852 human cases (232 fatalities) from 39 states  (as compared with 149 human cases counted by CDC 1999-2001).

The University of Minnesota's Raptor Center had reported increasing numbers of raptors picked up sick or dead earlier this fall, and thought to be infected with WNV. The National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) tested 30 cases : In sum, NWHC diagnosed 9 as confirmed and 10 possible cases of WNV. Further confirmatory testing is planned for the 10 possible cases.

As of Dec 1, 2002, USDA APHIS reports 14,358 equine (horse) cases of WNV. Case numbers had been increasing at a rate of 400-500 per week since Oct 20, WNV has now been associated with illness and death in several other mammal species including mountain goats, squirrels, etc.  The Nov 29, 2002 CDC  also reports WNV infection from 42 states in thousands of dead birds (7,715 crows and 6,275 other dead birds).

The articles goes on about much more important information and provides valuable links to databases and statistics! It also has a great map showing the spread of the virus in North America - see below! Well worth checking out!!!

You might want to check out this poster as well: Mosquito Hygiene throughout the Life Cycle of Culex Mosquitoes (2nd ed.) has just been released. It is a full-color 11 x 17 poster showing what Culex mosquitoes look like at each stage of development (egg, larva, pupa and adult) and providing practical information about mosquito control at each life stage.
